October 16 is International Food Day
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was established on October 1945, 16, and has been widely celebrated as World Food Day on October 16 each year since that year.
The mission of World Food Day is:
- Focus on agricultural production and intensification of national conditions, the establishment of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, as well as the activities of non-governmental organizations in this area;
- Facilitate the development of economic and technical cooperation between developing countries;
- Close assistance to the rural population, especially women and the least privileged, with their participation in decision-making on activities to improve living conditions;
-Increasing awareness of the population about the problems of hunger in the world;
-Assistance in the process of technology delivery to developing countries;
- Strengthen the fight against hunger, malnutrition and poverty at the national and international levels, as well as support those who are successful in developing agriculture and food production.
From the focus of World Food Day 2012, agricultural cooperatives have a strong place. The official theme of World Food Day 2012 is “Agricultural Cooperatives Provide World Livelihoods”. It focuses on enhancing the role of cooperatives, strengthening food security and ending famine. The year 2012 has been declared the International Year of Cooperatives as the interest in rural organizations and cooperatives has been confirmed by the UN General Assembly.
Extensive work is being carried out in the Republic of Uzbekistan on the sustainable development and reform of the agricultural sector of the economy. New techniques and technologies for processing agricultural crops are being mastered, large black cattle of meat and dairy breeds are being purchased, and innovative agricultural exhibitions are being organized and held in our country from time to time. After all, the development of agriculture is one of the most important areas for the economy of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The agricultural sector provides the population directly with food products, and various industries with raw materials. Large mechanized branches of agriculture play an important role in the economy of the republic.
Along with cotton growing, rice, viticulture, vegetable growing, melon growing and cattle breeding are the leading branches of agriculture. In recent years, the cultivation of cereals has been growing rapidly. Grain farming is developing at the expense of wheat and barley on arable lands, and corn on irrigated lands. The share of grain crops is also increasing in the total irrigated area. Our country has become fully self-sufficient in grain products. At present, Uzbekistan is able to fully meet its demand for grain at the expense of the domestic market. Such positive results are achieved by increasing the area under grain crops and the yield of cereals.
The rapid development of Uzbekistan's agricultural sector will help it overcome the impending food crisis.
