September 17 - World Patient Safety Day
World Patient Safety Day is celebrated every year on September 17 to raise awareness about patient safety and encourage people to take action to ensure patient safety. The day was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019 to reduce patient harm, promote patient-centred care and promote a culture of safety in healthcare facilities worldwide.
Patient safety is an important aspect of healthcare. According to the WHO, millions of patients suffer preventable harm every year from unsafe healthcare practices, including medicines, healthcare-associated infections, diagnostic errors and surgical complications. .
