Zahiruddin Muhammad Babur
(1483-1530)
It is well known from history that the famous poet and statesman Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur founded the Baburi kingdom in India in the early 1483th century, and until the 14th century, this dynasty carried out creative and enlightenment work in this country. Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur was born on February 1494, 12 in the city of Andijan. His father, Amir Temur's nephew Umarshaikh Mirzo, was the governor of the Fergana region, and his mother, Kutlug Nigor, was a descendant of the Tashkent khans. After the death of Umarshaikh Mirzo in 11, 250-year-old Zahiriddin ascended the throne and became the governor of Fergana region. However, in the XNUMX years since his accession to the throne, various political changes in Central Asia have forced him to move first to Badakhshan and then to Kabul with his relatives and about XNUMX infantry.
Babur was originally stationed in Afghanistan. In 1519 he set out for India, and in April 1526 succeeded in conquering its northern part. Babur succeeded in establishing a large state in India and chose the city of Agra on the Yamuna River as his capital. The famous poet and statesman died on December 1530, 26. He was first buried in a temporary mausoleum in Agra, then moved to the Afghan capital, Kabul, and is now housed in the Babur Garden in Kabul.
From an early age, Zahiriddin loved to travel. Even hardened on such trips. Despite his young age, he was able to imagine the geographical appearance of our country. At the age of 15-16, the scientist traveled to Fergana, Samarkand and Tashkent several times. At the age of 19 he climbed the mountain from Gissar, crossed the Fondaryo and Iskandarkol rivers into the Zarafshan valley and came to Samarkand. He writes about it: “..We entered the Kamrud gorge and went upwards. There were many horses and camels on the narrow and steep roads, high and steep passes. We landed three or four places and reached Siratag pass. Dovonmisan-dovon. We have never walked such high and steep roads. After many anxieties and hardships, we came to Fon district, passing through dangerously narrow and narrow passages, overcoming catastrophic heights and narrow passages with a hundred sufferings. There is a large lake between the mountains of the background, the environment of which is about a shari'a level, a strange lake; Given the fact that this trip of Bobur took place 480 years ago, we can be sure of his passion for adventure.
According to Babur, until the age of 21 he was in all cities and villages from Fergana to Bukhara, from Tashkent to Gissar and Herat, as well as in the steppes. The easternmost place he visited in the Fergana Valley is the city of Uzgen. Bobur was also well acquainted with the west of Uzbekistan, Bukhara and Karshi. He also lived for some time on the border between Iran and Afghanistan, in Herat, one of the largest capitals of the time. Thus, having spent almost 36 years of his life traveling and traveling tens of thousands of kilometers, Babur traveled from Fergana to Bangalore (Bengal in India).
During his travels, Babur collected a wealth of information for his masterpiece "Boburnoma". According to sources, he always had a notebook with him and immediately wrote down what he saw, knew and heard. He later organized his writings, made additions, edited them, and made them into a single work.
In fact, along with the works of art created by the scientist, "Boburnoma" contains important information about the geography, history, socio-economic life, nature, ethnography and medicine of Central Asia, Afghanistan and India. rin holds. "Boburnoma" is a detailed description of the life of Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur in Fergana from his youth until he became king in India.
The play describes in detail the places that Babur saw in the vast area from Fergana to India, their nature, wealth, people, customs, animals and plants.
It is noteworthy that any representative of any science or profession can find the necessary information in this book. "Boburnoma" was written in the old Uzbek language and is now translated into modern Uzbek.
The information given in "Boburnoma" shows that the scientist was well acquainted not only with natural sciences and geography, but also with biology, zoology, ethnography, history and other sciences. In particular, in "Boburnoma" more than a thousand geographical names - country, city, village, castle, steppe, mountain, pass, gorge, river, bridge, crossing, lake, spring, garden, pasture, o The names of places and other places are mentioned. In addition, Babur mentioned the names of several distant countries (Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan, Greece, Tibet, China, Kashgar), which indicates that the scientist was well acquainted with the geography of the world at that time.
In his work, Babur described the climate, topography, population and other features of different places, and skillfully used a comparative method of comparing them with each other. This is one of the most widely used methods in modern geography. In particular, Babur compares Osh with Ko son (now Kosonsoy in Namangan region) and writes: “Just as water comes to Andijan from Osh, water comes to Aksi from Kasan. The weather is nice. There are ceramic gardens… There are similarities between Osh and Kasan in happiness… »
The Boburnoma also compares the characteristics of the population living in different places and provides very interesting information: “… In Khorasan and Samarkand the Turks and the provinces are Kuchmans. In Afghanistan, Hazaras and Afghans are migrating. ”
"Boburnoma" scientifically describes the nature of the mountains in different places, their geomorphology and even the excision of the slopes. In particular, Babur reports heavy rainfall in the southern foothills of the Gissar Mountains. He correctly assessed the winter climate of the Fergana Valley, which was due to the fact that the air currents blow from west to east, and they enter the valley mainly through Bekabad.
"Boburnoma" contains a lot of information about the rivers and lakes of our country. The depth, freezing, water consumption and sources of the rivers are described in detail in the play. As early as the beginning of the XNUMXth century, Babur pointed out that the Hindu Kush and the Himalayas in Asia were the mountains that separated the waters of the northern and southern rivers.
The play also describes many herbs and trees, their properties and importance by the author as a master naturalist. He writes: “There are good pastures in the surrounding mountains of Fergana region. Tobulgu is in these mountains, nowhere else. Tobulgu is a shrub-like tree with a red bark, from which a stick, a whip, and birds feed; They make a bow and arrow, it is a very good tree… »
Indian plants are also widely covered in the Boburnoma. All the trees, fruits, cocaine and flowers of the place are described in great detail. The names of the tropical plants mentioned in the play are also of great terminological significance. In particular, the play contains information about a banana tree called keyla and a coconut palm (anba). For example, the characteristics of the Indian flora, which is now scientifically proven to be 33% endemic species, have been extensively substantiated in his work since the time of Babur.
In Babur's work, the fauna was divided into four types: land animals, birds, aquatic and waterfront birds, and aquatic animals. This shows that Babur was engaged in the classification of fauna as early as the XVI century. His information about the Indian elephant is especially interesting. “Biri One of the wild animals is an elephant. The Indian calls it ‘haati’… The elephant is a large and intelligent animal. He knows everything they say and does whatever he is told. ”Babur wrote about rhinoceros:“ Another is rhinoceros. It is also a large animal. It is three cubits in size. It has a king on its nose, more than an inch long.
The names of places and natural objects mentioned in the "Boburnoma" are given in the language of the people living there. This is one of the main rules of toponymy, that is, the author is well aware that place names are not translated. Babur called the mountains in the south-east of the Fergana Valley (now called the Turkestan Range) the Andijan Mountains, and the mountains in the north (Talas) the Yettikent Mountains. Hundreds of geographical names in Central Asia, Afghanistan and India, including Konibodom, Hodarvesh, Kuhisafid, Nazargoh, Tashkent, Samarkand, Sivolak, are explained in historical and lexical terms.
The peculiarity of "Boburnoma" is that in it the author describes in simple language the nature, geographical features, flora and fauna and economic potential of different regions as a whole. Babur's birthplace is the Fergana Valley and the geographical location of India, where he spent part of his life, its mountains, waters, deserts, pastures and gardens, which correspond to their modern state. provided comparative data. In this sense, Boburnoma is the first major natural, historical, and geographical work written in Uzbek, and Bobur was the first scholar to describe the geography of Central Asia, Afghanistan, and India in Uzbek. .

The Baburi dynasty, along with the establishment of a great state in India, carried out beautification work in this country and made a significant contribution to the development of science and enlightenment in the country. Babur and his descendants also built majestic architectural monuments such as the Taj Mahal, the Shah Akbar Mausoleum, the Red Forts in Agra and Delhi, which are still a favorite pilgrimage place not only for Indians but also for tourists from all over the world.

Bobur's scientific legacy as an important historical and geographical source is still widely studied by scientists. "Boburnoma" has been translated into Arabic, Persian, Indian, English, German, French, Dutch and Turkish, and many copies are kept in prestigious libraries around the world. According to A. Vamberi, a Hungarian traveler who studied Central Asia in the XNUMXth century, "Bobur's Boburnoma is as important in world literature as Julius Caesar's Commentaries."
