Hayrat Turakurgani (1845-1915)

Hayrat (1845-1915), the son of Umrzaq Kholboy, was an enlightened poet and a fine calligrapher. He was born into a poor peasant family in Yortepa, Turakurgan district, Namangan region.

He first studied at a village school, then at the Goyibnazar madrasah in the center of Turakurgan. While studying, he became interested in art and diligently read works of Uzbek and Persian-Tajik classics. He learned many secrets of the art of calligraphy.

After graduating from the madrasa, he worked as a mirza for the commander of Turakurgan.

As new method schools began to open, students from the countryside began to come to study in these schools. As secular knowledge is taught, the poet encourages the children in his village to read. Like his friend Furkat and other enlighteners, Hayrat promotes science, education, science and culture in many of his poems.
