Causes of constipation

Many factors lead to constipation. The most common of these are intense stress, long trips, and post-surgical conditions.

The reasons may be:

  • Hypodynamics (inactivity);
  • Low fluid intake;
  • Excessive adherence to diet;
  • Fecal stone;
  • Chronic inflammatory diseases of the pancreas;
  • Dysbacteriosis;
  • Ulcerative diseases of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • Hemorrhoids;
  • Paraproctitis;
  • Neurological pathologies (stroke, parkinsonism, sclerosis);
  • Spinal injuries;
  • Diabetes mellitus;
  • Hypothyroidism (thyroid dysfunction);
  • Depression;

Constipation is also observed in 2/3 of pregnant women. The main cause of constipation in breastfed children is dysbacteriosis.

Symptoms of constipation

Constipation is explained by the inability of the nutrients consumed to travel in the intestinal cavity. In this case, due to impaired motility of the intestinal wall, there is no diarrhea for 2 days or more. Accumulation of fecal mass in the intestine causes pain and discomfort in the abdominal area. Most patients experience bowel movements.

Other characters include:

  • Decreased appetite;
  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth;
  • Headaches;
  • Chest pain: tachycardia;
  • Muscle aches;
  • Insomnia;
  • Decreased vitality;
  • Occurrence of neurotic states;

In chronic constipation, yellowing of the skin, decreased skin elasticity, and paleness are observed.

Complications of constipation

In addition to the feeling of heaviness in the abdomen, pain and flatulence, the following complications can occur:

  • Colon diverticulum;
  • Bowel obstruction;
  • Bleeding from hemorrhoids;

The listed symptoms will be a signal to consult a doctor. Constipation can cause serious changes that occur in the digestive organs and endocrine system. One of the worst complications is the formation of a tumor in the colon because there is a theory that the residual toxin that remains in the intestine alters cell growth.

Diagnosis of constipation

A number of specialist consultations will be needed to determine the root cause of constipation. First of all you will need the advice of a doctor proctologist or gastroenterologist. An additional examination is performed by colonoscopy or irrigoscopy to confirm the diagnosis.

Note: A colonoscopy is an examination of the colon with a special tube inserted and illuminated. Irrigoscopy is a non-invasive procedure that involves sending an X-ray contrast agent to make an X-ray. In addition, an ultrasound scan of the abdomen can be performed.

Treatment of constipation at home

Drugs used in constipation are recommended only when the root cause is determined.

In case of constipation, diet should be done first. The diet should include products rich in plant fiber. It is necessary to consume more fruits and vegetables. Meals should be eaten sparingly, often 5-6 times a day.

Note: If you want to get rid of constipation, follow a diet, consuming at least 2 liters of fluid a day gives good results.

An enema can also help with constipation. It is necessary to add vegetable oil or fish oil.

Important: Diarrhea suppositories are not a cure for constipation, but it is a first aid kit.

It is recommended to choose an active lifestyle to avoid constipation. If you don’t have time to do morning and evening jogging, exercise at your workplace. If you are taking medications that worsen intestinal motility (antidepressants, antiacids, or atropine), stop them for a period of time in consultation with your doctor.

If constipation is observed in children…

Constipation in children can be caused by:

  • Diseases of the digestive system (developmental abnormalities);
  • Diseases of the nervous system and endocrine system;
  • Vitamin D deficiency (rickets);
  • Disorders of the breastfeeding mother's diet;

The volume of feces excreted is assessed based on the individual condition of the child. It is determined not by the size and number of feces of the child, but by the addition to body weight. In children on artificial feeding, diarrhea is required once a day.

Constipation in children can be detected by:

  • The child's whimsy;
  • Loss of appetite;
  • Trouble when stool comes;
  • The pungent odor of the gas coming out of the rear exhaust hole;
  • No mass gain to body weight.

If a child is diagnosed with any of the conditions listed above, it is important to contact a local pediatrician immediately.

Treatment of constipation with folk remedies

Black plum (dried). Take half a kilo of dried black plums and boil in 1,5 liters of water for 25 minutes on low heat. Then wait for it to calm down. Take Krushina root into a powder and add 50 g of boiling water. Boil on low heat for 25 minutes. Wait for it to settle, then add 200 g of nectar and drink half a glass before going to bed. The taste of the mixture is quite pleasant.

For breakfast, mix the beets, cabbage and carrots on a grater, add olive oil to it and eat.

Consumption of bran. Take 1 teaspoon of boiled bran in the first ten days. Eat it 3 times a day before meals. The next phase is taken 2 teaspoons, 2 times a day for 3 weeks. Consumption of bran improves intestinal function and prevents poisoning of the body.

Performing exercises that improve bowel movements

Folk medicine has great benefits in improving the intestinal system, for example, when you wake up in the morning, massage the abdominal area clockwise without getting out of bed.

Lie on your back, place the fingers of both hands 2 cm below the navel and take a deep breath and press with your fingers until you feel something hard, hold it for 2 minutes. Do the exercise 3-5 times a day.

Treatment of constipation in children

Start giving 1 drop of sterilized (pure) vegetable oil every morning before feeding the baby. On the second day take 2 drops and half a teaspoon in the same way. To sterilize the oil, put the oil in a jar and soak it in cold water. Wait for the pot filled with water and the jar in it to boil over low heat and let the water boil for half an hour.

Surgical intervention

If constipation is observed along with benign or malignant tumors in the intestinal walls, immediate surgical intervention should be performed.
