Zakat on horses
Zakat is not given on horses, donkeys, mules, lambs, (less than one year old) camels and calves. According to the owner, Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad, zakat is not given for horses.
According to Imam A'zam, may Allah have mercy on him, horses are divided into two types: horses that graze and earn their livelihood (saima), and horses that are fed (at home) (olufa). These two parts horses are further subdivided into two: commercially used horses and non-commercially used horses.
Zakat must be paid on horses used for commercial purposes, whether they graze or eat fodder, because these horses are commercial property. If horses are not used commercially, they are further divided into two: horses used for transportation and riding, and horses not used for such purposes. Zakat is not given on horses used for transportation and riding, whether they eat fodder or graze. If not used for such a purpose, it is also divided into two: grazing and feeding horses. If there is a horse that is fed, zakat is not given. When grazing horses are grazed for milk or for breeding, they are also divided into two: male horses and mares. Each of these is divided into two. If the horses are from pure Arabian horses, the owner, if he wishes, pays one dinar per horse, or five dirhams (2,5 per cent) for two hundred dirhams, calculating the total value of the horses, if desired.
If the horses being bred for milk or for breeding purposes are not from Arabian horses, only five dirhams out of every two hundred dirhams are given as zakat, based on their value.
