The French are a people. The main population of France. 57 mln. (mid-1990s). He speaks French. The believers are Catholics. The Celtic tribes (called Romans by the Romans) who settled in present-day France in the middle of the 1st millennium BC played an important role in the ethnogenesis of F. After the Roman Empire conquered Gaul (modern-day France) (58-52 BC), F. intervened. As the Gauls became Romanized, their language became "Latin." The invasion of Gaul by the Germanic tribes of the Visigoths, Burgundy, and Franks in the 5th century was important in F.'s ethnic history. The Frankish state was formed. In the 9th century, this state was transformed into a large empire by Charlemagne. In the 9th century F. was formed as a nation. The Great French Revolution of the late 18th century was a decisive factor in the formation of F. as a nation.
