The construction of the first nuclear power plant in Belarus began in July 2011. The Russian project "AES-1200" with water-water reactor "VVER-2006" was chosen for its construction. The station is located on the north-western border of Belarus, 18 kilometers from the city of Ostrovets, Grodno region, in the town of Vornyani - 40 kilometers from the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius. The main partner of Belarus in the construction of the NPP was the company "Atomstroyexport" of the state corporation "Rosatom". The first power unit of BelAES, commissioned on November 2020, 7, was connected to the country's unified energy system on November 3. 22 million kilowatts/hour of electricity was released from BelAES for three days after it was connected to the energy system.
