About compact discs

One of the most common media for storing information today is compact discs. We all know compact discs like CD, DVD. But not everyone knows about their types.

HD DVD - high definition DVD - high quality DVD
BD - Blu-Ray Disc - (we didn't know the translation)
- CD-disks are usually up to 700MB in size. That's why you can't write a lot of information on them. CDs are mainly designed for recording songs and small amounts of data. The main types of CDs:
— CD-ROM - Compact Disk-Read Only Memory (compact disk - for reading only) - a disk with a ready-made program or similar product written in it, usually in certain enterprises;
— CR-R - Compact Disk - Recordable (compact disk - for one-time recording) - commercially available rotating, hollow disk;
— CD-RW — Compact Disk-Rewritable (compact disk - for multiple rewritable) - a commercially available disk designed to erase and rewrite recorded data.
— DVD-disks have an average of 4,5 gigabytes of space. They are mainly designed for storing large movies and data. The main types of DVD disc:
— DVD-ROM is a disc like CD-ROM, only larger in size;
— DVD-Video – disc intended for recording audio and video formats in compact form;
— DVD-Audio is a disc format designed to record high-quality, uncompressed audio;
— DVD-R(G) is a recordable disc;
— DVD-R(A) – a disc intended for reading only with a special device;
— DVD+R(G) – disc designed for one-time information recording;
— DVD-RAM is a multi-rewritable disc, based on CD-RW technology, developed by Hitachi, multi-rewritable;
— DVD-RW — developed by the company "Pioner" and based on CD-RW technology, it is not intended for multiple rewriting;
- DVD+RW - developed by "Philips", "Sony" and "Hewlett-Packard" corporation. Not compatible with DVD-RW format;
— DVD-VR – designed to record real-time videos in MPEG2 format.
— HD-DVD is designed to store high-quality video formats, and its size is much larger than ordinary DVD discs — 15 gigabytes.
- When we talk about CD and DVD discs, we should also talk about their physical size. HD-DVD and BD discs, however large their storage capacity, are 12 cm in diameter, just like regular DVDs and CDs. However, there are also DVD discs with a diameter of 8 cm, their size is usually around 1 gigabyte, and they are used for recording additional programs for various devices.
