Gadfield Steel

Gadfield steel was invented in 1882 by the English metallurgist Robert Gadfield. Its peculiarity is that the more you mechanically affect it, the stronger it becomes. For this reason, it is used to make non-sawable window bars in multi-track railroad crossings, tanks, tractors, crusher jaws, especially for prisons. During World War I, British infantry and US M1 infantry helmets were made from Gadfield steel.
