Appendix - an unnecessary member?

For many years, the appendix was viewed as an unnecessary, no-function organ. Now, it is known from reliable sources that the appendix acts as a reservoir of “good” bacteria.

If a pathogenic infection enters the gut, the body reacts to it and tries to wash away the infection (diarrhea). Along with pathogenic bacteria, good bacteria are also washed away and the normal microflora needs to be replaced quickly. At this time, unwashed bacteria in the appendix multiply rapidly and restore the normal microflora again.
