Why do almost 100% of electric cars have a single gear transmission?
Electric cars usually have only one transmission for several main reasons
An electric vehicle motor has a higher torque than an internal combustion engine, often exceeding 20 RPM in terms of RPM range, while normal atmospheric pressure engines operate in the range of 000 RPM or more. The reason is that due to simple mechanical limits, the piston moves up and down precisely at the same time, and due to this, the shaft rotates a limited amount. In diesel, this RPM is lower than in gasoline. An electric motor is built on the basis of a stator and a rotor, and thus it has a large torque momentarily. This situation allows them to drive at high speeds without the need for low-speed driving and gear changes. In terms of efficiency, a single-speed transmission reduces complexity and frictional losses compared to a multi-speed transmission, resulting in increased overall efficiency and potential for EVs.
