In Antwerp, for the first time in the world, a geographical atlas was printed, consisting of 53 maps, carved from copper plates, with large-format texts explained. This edition was created by the Flemish cosmographer Abraham Ortel (1527-1598) and is called Theatrum orbis terraum (View of the Earth). It clearly describes the state of geographical knowledge at that time. Despite several errors, this atlas was reprinted and supplemented several times and served as a “geographical bible” for sailors in the late XNUMXth and early XNUMXth centuries.
