Alexey Mareseyev

Hero of the Soviet Union Alexei Mareseyev was born in 1916. On April 1942, 4, in the battle with the Nazis in the area called "Demyan's Cauldron" (Novgorod Region), Alexei Mareseyev's plane was shot down, and Alexei himself was seriously wounded. The pilot, wounded in the leg, crawled to the front line for 18 days. Both his legs were amputated in the hospital. But he left the hospital and started flying again. During the war, he made a total of 86 sorties and shot down 11 enemy aircraft: four times before being injured and seven times after being injured.

Mareseyev became the prototype of the hero of the novel "The Story of a Real Man" by Boris Polevoy. Alexey Mareseyev died in 2001.
