National park area: 2292 km². The park got its name because of the abundance of lakes. The territory of the park was formed as a result of glaciers. The boundaries of the protected area almost coincide with the Cumberland Mountains. The park contains four of England's largest lakes, Windermere, Allwater, Bassenthwaite, Derwent Water and England's highest mountain, Scofell Pike.
