May 25 is Nerpenka Day in Russia

On May 25, the shores of Lake Baikal will celebrate a wonderful ecological holiday - Nerpenka Day. The first Nerpenka Day was held on May 25, 2003 in Irkutsk. First of a regional nature, it was later included in the ecological date calendar in many regions of Russia. Nerpenka Day is an environmental project for children and adolescents. In recent times, there has been a growing demand for items made from the skins of these animals. Therefore, the goal of this project is to protect Nerpa and their children. The proposal to hold this holiday was made by volunteers of the School of Young Leaders in Irkutsk. One of the main tasks of the holiday is to preserve the nature of Lake Baikal for the younger generation, to be kind to living creatures. On this day, thematic actions, contests and art exhibitions will be held in different cities under the slogans "I want to live!", "Protect me", "Living Nerpa is better than a hat".
