I usually advise my students to buy two dictionaries: the first dictionary should be a small, compact, self-portable dictionary; the second dictionary should be a large dictionary designed for advanced learners, given the most meanings of words. Carry your little dictionary with you as much as possible and try to repeat the words you are just memorizing as you find free time in any case. Regular repetition is a good help in memorizing words. You can use a large dictionary to create a list of new words you need to memorize, and to translate texts that are difficult for you. In either case, your main focus should be on repeating the words in a short amount of time, but often.

 

2. Read more English texts.

There is so much to learn by doing. The more you read, the more you will find words that are new to you, repeat the current memorized words, and reinforce the words you have memorized completely.

Better a poor horse than no horse at all. Quality reading is better than reading a lot. So as you read, try to think about the content of the text you are reading. This way you have a better understanding of what the author of the text is trying to say and pay more attention to the words being read.

Reading texts written in an artistic spirit, works, or excerpts from fiction is more effective than fictional texts. Therefore, it is important to take into account the style of writing the text when reading.

 

3. Do not be lazy in using the dictionary.

From personal experience, I can say that more than half of learners are too lazy to open a dictionary and search for a word when they come across a word that is unfamiliar to them. This is one of the biggest mistakes in word memorization. Never try to guess the meaning of a word based on the text. Instead, try to find that word in the dictionary, putting laziness aside. With this method, you can memorize not only the meaning of the word given in the text, but also other meanings.

 

4. Keep a dictionary notebook.

There are too many words in your dictionary. You may not remember them all, you may not use them all. Keeping a dictionary notebook at this point will allow you to gather the most used new words for you. One of the main conveniences of keeping a dictionary notebook is that you can keep it as you wish, group the memorized phrase or words in any way.

In short, it is not difficult to memorize words in English. It just depends on your behavior towards memorization. Remember that the only effective way to memorize words is to repeat them in a short time, but often!
