ORVI: If your child has a fever…
The last month of winter is coming to an end. However, seasonal diseases have not yet completely receded. Acute respiratory viral infections are particularly common among children.
In fact, there are many types of such infections. But in 99 percent of them, the symptoms and complications of the disease are almost the same. Influenza, inflammation of the upper and lower respiratory tract, sometimes cough, fever.
The most common among children is adenovirus infection. However, some parents are quickly confused when their child has this disease. Haste, on the other hand, often leads to misbehavior.
Abdumannon ABDUKAYUMOV, Chief Physician of the Republican Specialized Pediatric Research and Practice Medical Center, commented on this.
“Most parents think it is dangerous for a child to have a fever,” says the doctor. - Therefore, 80-90% of them immediately try to treat their child with antibiotics and other drugs when the body temperature rises.
There are even those who arbitrarily give antibiotics to a sick child. However, this can lead to very serious complications. For example, it causes intestinal dysbacteriosis. Some antibiotics can cause serious damage to the liver. That is why we always warn parents not to give antibiotics to their children without a doctor's advice.
As for fever, it is not recommended to give any medication if the body temperature does not rise to 38,0 degrees in children under one year of age and 38,5 degrees in boys and girls over one year of age. In particular, I would like to mention that antibiotics do not work at all in viral infections.
On the contrary, their improper use can cause serious damage to the child's health. Therefore, antibiotics should be taken only on the advice of a doctor.
It is recommended to drink warm water or other fluids frequently when the body temperature rises. This is because when a fever occurs, a large amount of sweat is released from the body and the body loses fluid. It is therefore advisable for the child to drink more fluids.
In fact, a rise in body temperature to 38,5 degrees indicates that the body is fighting the disease. That is, it is normal for the body to have a fever when an infection occurs.
If the child's fever exceeds 38,5 degrees, it is recommended to give him paracetamol or ibuprofen. This medicine can be used for 3 days. If there is no positive change in the child's general condition during this time, it is necessary to immediately consult a family doctor.
