Does anesthesia shorten life?

Over the centuries, many types of painkillers have been offered before surgery, some of which have been rejected.

In the Middle Ages, the patient was intoxicated by drinking alcohol. Later, a number of painkillers were used.

An incident that took place in the early XNUMXth century is exciting. French surgeon Vardrop deliberately allows the patient to bleed to relieve pain. The woman loses consciousness after losing a lot of blood, so the surgeon immediately goes to work, operates on the patient and removes the tumor on her forehead.

When the surgeon was asked why he did so, he recounted his observations many years ago. Surgeon Vardrop himself witnessed how the soldiers, who were wounded in the battle and lost a lot of blood, performed the operation easily and recovered in a short time.

In the early twentieth century, as a result of continuous research, scientists developed the drug kurare, which was used as an anesthetic. This was a great breakthrough in anesthesiology.

Now the methods of anesthesia have been improved. The success of many complex, even brain, and organ transplants is the result of centuries of research by scientists.

Painkillers are administered to the patient in several ways. For example:

inhalation anesthesia (inhaled);
intravenous (sleeping drug barbiturate) acid product is used;
through the rectum;
intraosseous (in cases where the subcutaneous vein is not well developed, the drug is injected into the bone);
between muscles;
applied subcutaneously.
Under inhalation anesthesia, the vapor of ether and similar substances is inhaled into the patient. This uses special devices, the advantage of which is that the patient falls asleep quickly and does not feel anything.

Inhalation anesthesia is often used in combination with intravenous anesthesia, which means that the drug is injected into a vein and the inhaled anesthetic is given when the patient is asleep. In this way, the lungs, heart, large blood vessels, and brain can be operated on easily. Depending on the situation, patients are also given electron anesthesia (a special device is applied to the brain with a certain frequency current).

Sometimes we hear people say that anesthesia shortens life by five or six years. This is absolutely wrong! At all times, the life of a patient has been a priority for physicians. If anesthesia was harmful to human health and life, this method would not be used in surgery at all.
