May 21 is Temple Demonstration Day in Japan
On May 21, Tokyo will host the most famous and noisy public holiday - Sanjia or "Temple Festival". Like all Japanese festivals, Sandzya matsuri is distinguished by its diversity and is attended by about 2 million people. Why is it called a “Temple Demonstration” because the gathered are divided into groups, each carrying a miniature copy of the temple weighing 220 kg (Japanese mikosi). Mikosi is present in almost every Japanese temple, and they are taken out at the annual festival for everyone to see. The uniqueness of this festival is that about a hundred mikos from different temples of Japan participate at the same time. In order not to get lost in the crowd, each group will be in their local national costumes. The celebration begins at 8 a.m. in Asakusa, Tokyo County and ends at 8 p.m. At the beginning of the process, representatives of the Sensodzi Temple go to the sound of drums and music. Musicians play melodies dedicated to this day. Participants sing hymns. Sandzya matsuri can also be called a celebration of Japanese national costumes. On this day, musicians, dancers, children and even dogs in national costumes can be seen on the streets. Tourist guides associate this Sandzya matsuri with the Japanese, as well as with the introduction of medieval Japanese culture.
