In 1812, the merchant Ivan Kuskov founded the Russian settlement of Fort Ross in Alaska, which for decades served as the base of the Russian-American company engaged in hunting and trading fur animals in the Americas.

On March 1867, 30, Russia signed an agreement to sell Alaska and the Aleutian Islands to the United States, and in October of the same year, Alaska was transferred to the United States.

After Alaska became an American possession, the US Department of Defense administered the peninsula for 17 years.
Alaska slowly began to generate income. Fur clothing, fishing, canning, and mining changed the state and way of life in Alaska.
