In 1803, an important land deal took place between the United States and France. It involved the purchase of a vast area known as the Louisiana Territory, stretching from the Mississippi River in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west, and from the Gulf of Mexico in the south to the Canadian border in the north. The US paid $15 million ($1,2 billion today) for the land, which doubled the size of the country. As much as France did not want this territory for herself, these lands that were sold were rich in natural resources and fertile fields, contributing to the expansion and growth of the United States.
