Sri Lanka (Ceylon until 1972), Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is a country located on the island of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean, southeast of the Indian subcontinent. The area is 65,6 thousand km². A total of 23,5 mln. person (2019). The official capital is JayavardenapuraKotte (where the parliament is located); The current capital is Colombo. Administratively, it is divided into 9 regions (rgoutse).
Sri Lanka is a member of the British-led Commonwealth. The current constitution was adopted on September 1978, 7; later amended. The head of state is the President (Ms. Kumaratunga Chandrika since 1994). Legislative power is exercised by the president and a unicameral parliament, while executive power is exercised by a government headed by parliament and the prime minister.
