The name of Safiyya's father is Huyay ibn Akhtab ibn Sayah ibn Salabah ibn Ubayd ibn Ka'b ibn Khazraj ibn Abu Habib ibn Nazir ibn Nihom ibn Nahum.
Her mother's name was Barrah bint Simvaal and she was the sister of Rifa ibn Simvaal.
Safiyya converted to Islam on the day of Khaybar in the year 7 AH (628 AD). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) married Safiyya at the age of sixty in the same year.
It is narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) freed Safiyya and gave her the freedom to go to her family or stay with them. This noble woman also responded to such kindness in her own way and chose Allah and His Messenger. He declared his choice of Islam and expressed his ancient love for Islam. He also had great devotion to this great Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and refused to return to his people and family.
Ibrahim ibn Ja'far narrated on the authority of his father that when Safiyya came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), he said to him: ». She said, 'O Messenger of Allah! After all, Allah says in His Book, "On the Day of Resurrection, no sinner will bear the guilt of another soul." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Your choice is yours. If you choose Islam, I will take you. If you choose Judaism, I can set you free and you will return to your people." Safiyya said, “O Messenger of Allah, when I came to your people, I loved Islam and confirmed you before you called me. Now I have no need for Judaism and I have neither father nor brother there. You have given me the choice to return to disbelief or to be in Islam. Allah and His Messenger are dearer to me than being free and returning to my people.
Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) took Safiyya with them. With these answers, Safiyya proved that her faith was strong, sharp-witted, and noble.
But this mother's father was hostile to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) until the end of his life. The Qur'an warns of how dangerous they are and describes their true selves in full. No one can change what God has created.
Safiyya bint Huyay narrated ten hadiths from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had many great wisdoms in marrying this woman, which only the possessors of intellect and thinking can understand.
Our mother Safiyya bint Huyay died in Madinah in the year 50 AH (661 AD). They bequeathed a thousand dinars to 'A'isha bint Abu Bakr. They were buried in Baki cemetery, next to our other mothers.
