In ancient times, Indians and Eskimos lived in what is now the United States. After the discovery of America by Columbus in 1492, it began to occupy vacant lands in Spain, France, England, the Netherlands, Sweden, and North America in the 16th century. In the mid-18th century, Britain drove out its main rivals and established its colonial rule in the eastern part of the continent. At the same time as the occupation and settlement of the lands, the local population was exterminated and black Negro slaves were brought in from Africa en masse. During the North American War of Independence of 1775–83, a federal state, the United States of America, was established on July 1776, 4, and was proclaimed a republic. J. Washington was elected the first president of the United States.
