May 15 is Black Tulip Day in the Netherlands
On May 1637, 15, a very large feast was declared. All botanists and horticultural specialists from around the world were invited to the celebration. The celebration begins with a ceremonial carnival of men dressed in long dresses carrying black tulips in their hands on Harlem Central Street. They are followed by white velvet mattresses with black-purple tulips in a crystal vase in the middle. In March 1986, Henk van Dam, director of the Dutch National Institute, told reporters that absolutely black tulips were grown in the institute’s laboratory. Thus, in 1637, a typical variety of black tulip was grown.
