Halloween is celebrated in the United States on October 31st. The name Halloween comes from All Hallows Eve, or the day before All Saints Day, a traditional holy day for Christians. Halloween originated in Europe, but during the 19th century, immigrants brought it to North America and there
spread and developed in many ways. According to tradition, the spirits of the dead returned to life in the physical world to harm people and crops. People try to calm down annoying spirits on Halloween, and this habit has led to today’s Halloween traditions. For example, people wore the clothes of animals, ghosts, and devils to scare away evil spirits.
People still celebrate wearing scary costumes. Today, however, they dress up as celebrities, children’s show characters, princesses, superheroes, and more. Once dressed, the children engage in trickery. They go from house to house in their homes, shouting, "Trick or treat!" They ask for treats like candy and snacks. Traditionally, if left untreated, they can trick homeowners.
