DEGREE GRID, MERIDIAN AND
PARALLELS

▪️The two non-rotating (non-moving) parts of the Earth are called the poles. These are the north and south poles.

▪️ North and South Pole
connecting lines are called meridian lines.

▪️Because the circle is 360°
the number of meridians is also 360
is calculated.

▪️Prime meridian, i.e. 0° meridian, passes over the Greenwich observatory near the city of London, so it is also called the Greenwich meridian.

Areas located east of the prime meridian are called east longitude and areas west of the prime meridian are called west longitude. So, until 1800, the places in the east are called eastern longitude and the places in the west are called western longitude.

The line that is equidistant from the north and south poles and passes through the center of the globe is called the equator.

▪️Circular lines drawn from the equator to the north and south poles are parallel
called lines.

Areas located south of the equator are called southern latitudes, and areas north of the equator are called northern latitudes.

▪️The degree grid is debited to the grid formed by the intersection of the meridian and parallel lines.

▪️The geographical latitude and longitude of any place on the globe can be determined using the degree grid.
