The most expensive car in the world: Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé

A 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe became the most expensive car sold at auction in 2022 for €135 million - equivalent to $145,7 million.

The car was previously owned by Mercedes-Benz and was sold by RM Sotheby's to a buyer who chose to remain anonymous at the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

The price of $145,7 million is the current world record for any car, more than double the previous record held by the Ferrari 250 GTO. It was so expensive that the opening price of the SLR was higher than the closing price of the 250 GTO.

Only two 300 SLR Uhlenhaut coupes were produced by Mercedes-Benz, named after Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the firm's chief engineer.

The car was designed as a road-going version of the W 196 R grand car, with an enlarged 3,0-liter straight-eight engine capable of reaching a top speed of 290 kilometers per hour.
