May 17, International Telecommunication Day (1969)
Telecommunication is the transmission of data using electrical signals, which are transmitted by wire or radio signals, by optical communication systems, by telegraph, by telephone, by fax, by the Internet. That is why on this day all workers in the energy sector celebrate their professional holiday. The introduction of telecommunications is expanding year by year. Telecommunications workers are giving us the opportunity to connect with people around the world. We receive information from all parts of the globe, we follow events around the world. All this is possible due to many other things telecommunications. International Telecommunication Day has been celebrated since 1969 by the decision of the session of the Administrative Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This holiday was established in 1865 in Paris in honor of the founding of the World Telecommunication Union. On May 1844, 24, Samuel Morse sent his first message from the telegraph network from Washington to Baltimore, announcing the beginning of this age of simple business telegraph communications. But only telegraph communication services became available to the general public. At that time, the telegraph network did not cross national borders. Because each country used its own system, messages that crossed the border from a neighboring country had to be decrypted and read again in a new system via the telegraph network. Given the slowness and unmanageable nature of these systems, many countries have finally decided to take steps to facilitate the interaction of national networks. However, such measures were taken by countries within their national borders, and the establishment of a telegraph network often required a very large number of additional separate agreements. In the case of Prussia, more than fifteen agreements were required for relations between the capital and other German states bordering the provinces. To simplify the solution of these questions, countries have begun to develop bilateral or regional agreements. In 1864 there were several general regional agreements. The rapid expansion of telegraph networks in many countries has finally prompted 20 European countries to meet to reach an agreement on the development of international communication structures. At that time, this group established general rules for equipment standardization to simplify international communications, adopted general operating instructions for all, and established common international tariff and billing rules. After two and a half months of difficult negotiations, on May 1865, 17, in Paris, 20 members signed the first International Telegraph Treaty and the International Union of Telegraphs (International Telecommunication Union) was founded. Today, about 150 years later, the reasons that led to the formation of the International Telecommunication Union are still important and the main goals of the organization remain unchanged. Traditionally, on this day, each country reviews the results of the total work done in recent years in the field of communications.
