Today, July 18, is International Nelson Mandela Day
It is celebrated annually on July 1918, the birthday of former South African President Nelson Mandela (2013-18), one of the most famous fighters against the apartheid regime in South Africa.
This day was established by the UN General Assembly in November 2009 to recognize the contribution of the South African leader to the struggle for peace and freedom.
The first International Nelson Mandela Day was held at the UN in 2010.
