The duration of labor depends on the length of the fetus

The duration of labor depends on the length of the fetus
No matter how long you plan to have a baby, remember that pregnancy is not an exact science. When fertilization occurs by in vitro fertilization (IVF), more accurate fertilization times can be determined. Based on this, it is possible to make a more accurate estimate of the time of birth.

However, it is impossible to accurately determine when the sperm unites with the egg.

How is the gestation period calculated?
When fertilization occurs naturally, the gestational age is usually assessed as standard. The pregnancy calculator does not calculate when fertilization took place, but provides an appropriate estimate of the duration of labor based on the mother's menstrual history. The gestational age of a child is determined by determining the first day of the mother's last normal menstrual cycle and then adding 40 weeks to that date. This calculation is based on the fact that the mother's cycle lasts 28 days, while fertilization is estimated to occur approximately 14 days after the start of the cycle.

However, in most women, the length of the menstrual cycle varies. That is why it is important to take personal factors into account when determining the term.

If a woman has had an IVF, it is clear that some factors, such as the date of the child's birth, are present:

  • Date of fertilization
  • The period in which the embryo is implanted in the uterus.
  • The rate of embryonic development
Blood tests that reflect a mother’s hormonal levels can serve as another way to assess her pregnancy stage.
Who is on the list?
Typically, the gestation period is 38-42 weeks, so a 40-week period (280 days) is the norm. Interestingly, although most people think that pregnancy is 9 months, in fact it is closer to 10 months. This is because most expectant mothers count the week of pregnancy from the last menstrual period, not the two weeks after fertilization.

It is also common practice to adjust the estimated time to the estimated date of birth (TTS) or the estimated date of birth.

It is important to remember that every mother's body is unique, and the development of her child depends not only on the calendar days, but also on many factors.

Another way to determine the date of birth is to count back three months from the first day of the last normal menstrual period, then add seven days to that period. For example, if the mother's menstruation began on December 1, then the calculation of the trimester is on September 1 + 7 days, and the birth date is on September 8.

I know when it was fertilized…
In some cases, the duration of labor can be calculated based on the date of fertilization, if sexual intercourse has not occurred frequently. In some couples, physical contact, not to mention communication habits, is episodic and irregular.

This is why it is easier for some couples to determine with certainty when fertilization has taken place. And again, calculations based on dates are not accurate and should be considered ‘approximate’ at best.

I know exactly when I ovulated!
Indeed, most women have precise control over the ovulation cycle and can be sure when fertilization has taken place, but this may not be clear.

Ovulation and fertilization do not occur at the same time. Fertilization also does not occur immediately after sexual intercourse. It is unbelievable, but the sperm is able to survive for five days, during which time the egg can live for a short time, during which fertilization can take place. Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tubes without pain, at the microscopic level, and without noise. This process is not controlled by the mother’s mind; however, some women firmly believe that they realized when the embryo was attached to the uterine wall.

Fertilization usually occurs shortly, 12 to 24 hours after ovulation, when the egg is able to survive and fertilize. Most women become pregnant 11 to 21 days after the first day of their last menstrual period. If a woman keeps a menstrual chart, measures her temperature, and is confident that ovulation will occur, it will be easier to estimate when fertilization will occur.

What is the luteal phase?
The luteal phase is an important concept that you need to understand if you are trying to conceive. This is the phase of your menstrual cycle that begins after ovulation and lasts until:
  • OR until pregnancy occurs
  • The corpus luteum is disturbed until menstruation begins.
  • The standard duration of the luteal phase is 10 to 16 days - in most cases around 14 days.
  • If your cycle usually lasts 28 days, then ovulation will most likely occur on the 14th day;
  • If your cycle usually lasts 30 days, ovulation will most likely occur on the 16th day;
Other ways of estimating time
  • Ultrasound examination
This is a great way to monitor your child's development and growth. Vaginal UTT may be more accurate than blood UTT.
  • The growth of the child
Such measurements are not always accurate. Some children may be larger, while others may be smaller - there may not be a "one size fits all" when it comes to pregnancy.
  • Study of the mother's abdomen and comparison of its uterine size with classical size markers
For example:
  • By 12 weeks
  • By 20 weeks the uterus is at the level of the umbilical cord.
And again, such measurements represent only a general reference and cannot be considered as precise measurements.
