What is space?

Meconium is the baby’s first stool.
It is released in 1-2 days of the baby's life, it is odorless, in the form of a dark sticky substance with a dark olive color. All substances in the intestines of a child that have accumulated before birth and after the first breastfeeding are referred to by the term ‘meconium’. Mechanical composition consists of intestinal epithelial cells, pancreatic and intestinal juice, bile, absorption of water around the placenta, remnants of skin cells, and lanugo. The volume of meconium is 60–200 g, and in most cases it is eliminated from the body within the first 12 hours. In some cases, this period is extended to 48 hours and in rare cases to 72 hours. When the chemical composition of meconium is examined, a small amount of fat is detected and the protein is almost non-existent. The only exception is a group of children born with severe hereditary diseases - cystic fibrosis of the pancreas, in which the albumin content in the meconium increases sharply. The absence of epithelial cells in the meconium may be a sign of intestinal obstruction in the infant. The presence of satellite water in the meconium indicates the presence of asphyxia in the mother's womb before birth.
