This famous literary hero was a real person. He came to Russia in his youth from Bodenverder, Germany. Enlisted in the army, promoted to rotmistr. Then he returned to his homeland. There he tells amazing stories about his service in Russia and is famous for it. For example, the rumor that he went to St. Petersburg in a wagon with a wolf, that he saw a split horse in Ochakov, and that he was talking about a cherry tree growing on the head of a deer, startled the audience. Similar adventures, as well as stories written by other authors about the baron, led to the appearance of Munchausen in literature.
