Fall of the umbilical cord of the newborn

By the time you get home from the maternity ward, the baby’s umbilical cord has not yet fallen off. During this period, problems such as umbilical cord problems, umbilical hernia, prolonged umbilical hernia, and discharge from the umbilical cord may occur.

It takes 1-2 weeks for a newborn baby’s umbilical cord to fall off. During this period, care should be taken to ensure that the umbilical cord does not become infected with pus.

Many recommend wiping the umbilical cord with alcohol in order to “dry” it faster. In fact, the drier the wound, the better. Alcohol can make the skin itchy or red. In addition, any fluid slows wound healing.

The most important thing during the umbilical cord is to keep it dry. Ensure that the child does not sweat. Excessive sweating prevents the umbilical cord from rupturing, and it also makes it easier for the infection to spread where the sweat is flowing.

The umbilicus should come into contact with more open air. Open air accelerates wound healing.

Be careful not to cover the navel when you put the sole on the baby. The upper part of the sole should be slowly bent so that it does not reach the navel. The umbilical cord inside the soleplate is constantly wet due to vapors, which can lead to its prolonged rupture and the spread of infection.

It is important that the unfinished navel is not wet when you bathe the baby.

Never try to forcefully lower the drying umbilicus. The umbilicus should fall off in time to be sufficiently dry.

If required, the umbilical area can be gently wiped with an ear cleaner.

Signs of a problem in and around the navel:

• The navel itself or the skin around it is red;
• The umbilical cord is swollen;
• Fluid separates from the umbilicus;
• There is a bad smell coming from the navel;
• The umbilical cord seems to be hurting the baby.

If any of these symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately. It is not possible to treat a baby’s umbilical problems at home. Sometimes umbilical hernia is life-threatening for the baby.

When the dried umbilical cord falls naturally, a very small drop of blood or a small amount of yellowish fluid may be observed in its place. This condition should normally go away in 5-6 days. If it does not pass, it is necessary to consult a doctor. It is necessary to eliminate the possibility of infection in the umbilicus.
