Bering Vitus Ionassen (Ivan Ivanovich) - sailor-tourist, captain - commander. Originally from Denmark, he was drafted into the Russian Navy in 1703. Until 1724 he served in the fleets of the Baltic and Azov Seas. The Baltic was tasked in 1725 with determining whether Asia and America were connected by land or separated by a strait. He was appointed commander of the 1st Kamchatka Expedition in 1728-30. The expedition sailed back through the strait between the Chukotka Peninsula and Alaska to 670180. Bering was appointed commander of the 1733nd Kamchatka Expedition in 2. On July 1741, 17, Bering reached the American coast north by sea. Discovered some of the Aleut Islands. On his way back, one of the islands east of Kamchatka wintered in what is now the Bering Islands and died there. Bering is named after the sea, strait and island in the North Pacific.
