The hairs growing on the human body can be divided into fluffy and terminal hairs. Fluffy feathers (about 1,5 mm long) cover almost all parts of the body of children and adults. Terminal or permanent hair differs from fluffy hairs in color saturation, hardness, length, and growth under the influence of male sex hormones. The main hormone of the male body, testosterone, is produced in the testes. In women, male sex hormones are produced in two ways: in the adrenal glands and in the ovaries.

Androgens do not affect all hair in the same way. It is less important in the growth of fluffy hair, eyebrows, eyelashes. Coarse hairs growing on the scalp and armpits are also sensitive to small amounts of androgens. Therefore, in boys and girls during adolescence, coarse hairs begin to appear due to androgens produced by the adrenal glands. Because men are high in androgens, rough hair grows on the face, chest, abdomen, and ears. As a result of the strong effect of androgens on the hair growth area of ​​the head, hair loss is more common in men.

- early puberty;
- Disorders of the balance of thyroid hormones;
- metabolic disorders and overweight;
- ovarian and brain tumors, epilepsy, encephalitis;
- renal and liver pathologies;
- some medicines.
In women, the growth of thick hair on the top of the lips, chin, hips, chest or abdomen is a sign of hirsutism. Hirsutism can occur during adolescence or at different ages. If there is no excess hair in the offspring, it is better to consult a doctor.

In the first place, the disease that causes hirsutism is treated. If the condition is caused by taking a medication, the medication should be stopped. When hirsutism develops due to a tumor of the adrenal gland or ovaries, surgery to remove the tumor should be performed.
Pregnancy is often cited as the cause of hirsutism. During pregnancy, testosterone levels increase several times more than before. But this occurs at the request of the organism. Therefore, an increase in testosterone during pregnancy does not lead to excess hair growth. So there may be another problem here.

There is also hypertrichosis similar to hirsutism. In this case, as a result of dysfunction of the endocrine glands, excessive hair growth is observed. It occurs in both men and women. For example, hair growth on the legs of women is normal. But its overproduction is called hypertrichosis. Hair growth in the breast area is also normal in men, and its abundance is indicative of hypertrichosis.
