Karakalpak State University named after Berdakh was founded in 1976 on the basis of the Karakalpak State Pedagogical Institute named after TGShevchenko, and later the university was renamed Nukus State University.

By the decision of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Karakalpakstan No. 1992 of January 25, 274, it was renamed into Karakalpak State University named after Berdakh.

On the basis of pedagogical faculties of Karakalpak State University, the only higher education institution in the country, the current Nukus State Pedagogical Institute named after Ajiniyaz, Nukus branch of Tashkent State University of Information Technologies, Nukus branch of Tashkent Agrarian University and Nukus branches of Tashkent Pediatric Institute split apart.
