A woman prays in house clothes
Bismillahir rahmanir rahiym
Praise be to Allah, peace and blessings be upon His Prophet Muhammad ibn Abdullah, and his family and companions.
Sung…
Today, we see many women praying in tight, short clothes, such as house clothes, pants, loincloths, gowns, or the like. It is not surprising that the question of whether the prayer performed in such clothes is acceptable or not is of interest to many Muslims, especially our Muslim sisters.
First of all, we must remember that Allah has commanded that those who hesitate to pray be adorned. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“O children of Adam, adorn yourself at every prostration, and (as you wish) eat and drink, but do not waste. Surely He does not love the extravagant. (Araf: 31).
Thus, whoever wants to pray is commanded to adorn himself for prayer. Contrary to this command, most Muslims pray in their night pajamas or work clothes and do not adorn themselves for prayer. And Allah is beautiful and loves beauty.
According to the scholars, the least amount of adornment is to cover the awrah. Therefore, they said that covering the 'awrah is one of the important conditions for accepting the prayer. Whoever does not cover his' awrah, his prayer will not be accepted.
What they mean by "covering the 'awrah" is that it is obligatory to cover the' awrah, and it does not matter what is used in it. In this case, the prayer is valid, even if there is a garment that represents the shape of the 'awrah.
This is a fact stated by scholars of different sects. Here are some comments on the words.
1 - Hanafi school:
It is narrated in Ad-Dur al-Mukhtar (2/84): "It doesn't matter if it's narrow or body shape". Quote over. That is, it refers to the clothing worn in prayer.
Ibn 'Abidin (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in his commentary on al-Dur al-Mukhtar: “The phrase‘ it doesn’t matter if it’s body shape ’means that if the garment sticks to the buttocks. However, if the garment is thick and the color of the sweat is indistinguishable from it, as well as if it clings to the body parts and shows its shape as if the body parts are visible - this does not mean that the prayer is not valid. Because the 'awrah is still covered. ". The quote from Ibn 'Abidin is over.
2 - Shafi'i school:
Imam al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Majmu (3/176): “If the (skin) color is obscured but the size of the body part is known, such as the knee or buttocks, etc., (in this case) the prayer is valid. Because the awrah is hidden. Darimi and the author of al-Bayan said that if the body shape is visible, the prayer will not be valid. But this is a clear mistake. ". The excerpt from Imam Nawawi is over.
3 - Maliki sect:
Al-Fawaki al-Dawani (1/216) states: “If a person prays in one garment, his prayer is valid”: this meets the necessary conditions. This is because the garment is thick enough not to show anything. Otherwise it will be disliked. Again the clothes should cover her whole body. If the garment only covers the 'awrah, which is considered more personal, or shows the form of the' awrah, then it is makrooh to pray (in the garment), and if there is enough time left, he must repeat the prayer.. Quote over.
We would like to remind you that it is makrooh and not haram to pray in clothes that reveal the shape of the 'awrah.
It is narrated in al-Hashiyah al-Dasuqi that it is permissible to perform the prayer in a garment that represents the form of 'awrah, but it is makrooh. If there is enough time left, it is mustahab to repeat the prayer.
In Balgatul Salik (1/283) it is said: “The fabric should be thick, that is, it should not be transparent in appearance and should not be visible at all inside, or it should be transparent when viewed carefully. If the fabric is visible at a glance, it is as if it is not there (that is, it is as if you are praying naked, because it does not cover it). But if you look inside the cloth when you look at it, you will have to repeat the prayer if you have time. It is as if the garment reveals the shape of the awrah. Because it is makrooh to pray in such clothes.. Quote over.
4 - Hanbali sect:
Bahuti (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Raud al-Muraba (1/494): “It is not necessary to say that clothes do not show the shape or part of the body. Because there is no way to avoid it. "
Ibn Qasim, may Allaah have mercy on him, in his commentary on al-Raud al-Murabah, commented on Bahuti's words quoted above: “These three imams, Abu Hanifa, Malik and Shafi'i, have agreed. In other words, the views of Imam Ahmad on this issue are in line with the views of the three other Imams.
Ibn Qudama (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Mughni (2/287): “If he hides the color but shows the shape, the prayer will be valid. Because it is impossible to avoid it. " Quote over.
Mardavi said in al-Insaf (1/471): “Al-Majd ibn Taymiyyah said: It is makrooh for women to tie something (such as a belt) to clothing so that it shows the size of their body. Ibn Tamim and others said: It is makrooh for women to pray by tying something around their waist, such as a belt, etc.. Quote over.
Shaykh Sayyid Sobiq (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Fiqh al-Sunnah (1/97): "It is obligatory to wear clothes that cover the 'awrah, even if it is narrow and reveals the shape of the' awrah.". Quote over.
These were the words of the scholars about praying in tight clothes that make the 'awrah visible. They openly say that in such a case, the prayer will be acceptable.
However, this does not mean that people are encouraged to pray in tight clothing. On the contrary, they should not wear tight clothing or pray in it. This is because it contradicts the adornment that is prescribed for prayer. What is more important here is whether the prayer is valid or not.
Sheikh Salih Fawzan issued a fatwa stating that if a woman prays in a tight-fitting dress that shows the shape of her 'awrah, her prayer is valid, but she will be sinful for wearing it.
He says: “It is not permissible for a woman to wear tight clothing that reveals her body parts, shape and buttocks. Narrow clothing is not permissible for both men and women. However, this is not especially permissible for women. Because in their case there is more conspiracy.
As for the prayer alone, if a person prays in such a way with his' awrah closed, his prayer will be valid. But he is a sinner because he prays in tight clothes. Because he violated one of the commandments that required prayer by wearing tight clothing. This is the first aspect. The other aspect is that it causes conspiracy and draws attention, especially in the case of women. So women should cover their faces with loose clothing. That clothing should cover them and not show or draw attention to any part of their body. More precisely, it should be a dress that completely covers the woman. ". The quote is over (al-Muntaqo min Fatawa shaykh Salih al-Fawzan, 3/454).
Some scholars say that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Dressed but naked women" commented that it was aimed at women wearing tight clothes. Vallohu alam.
May Allah bless our Prophet, his family and his Companions.
