A newborn’s sleep plays an important role in its development.
Why doesn't the baby sleep well?
If the baby can't sleep, then something is bothering him:
1. His stomach may be hungry. Sometimes mothers say they have just breastfed and look for the reason why the baby is not sleeping in other cases. When a baby is not breastfeeding, he should not only feed his stomach, but his needs for his mother should be fully met. If the child does not let go of the mother's breast even after falling asleep, it means that he is not yet satisfied with his mother. Do not rush to go ahead. Dedicate yourself entirely to the child, not to the kitchen.
In the first 6 months of a baby’s life, if you breastfeed him as much as possible and carry him in your arms as much as possible, he will not have sleep problems. A baby fed on its mother and milk can easily sleep more than 8 hours a night after six months.
2. Her stomach hurts. To find out, gently rub the baby's abdomen in a clockwise direction with your palms you have previously rubbed. If the child stopped crying and went to sleep, it means that he was disturbed by gases. It is often necessary to lay the newborn on his stomach for a few seconds so that his abdomen does not rest.
Never leave a baby unattended while lying on its stomach! He may not be able to breathe for a few seconds.
3. The baby has any medical problems. If your baby has not been able to sleep at all for several weeks, and breastfeeding him or her during the day is not helpful, see a pediatrician or pediatric neurologist.
4. The baby's stomach is not getting enough. This condition can occur in breastfed babies. It is important to give artificial milk in the amount and time specified on the box. If a baby who is not breastfeeding is short of milk, he or she will increase the amount of milk he or she is breastfeeding each day. In two to three days, the mother's body adapts to the growing child's body and begins to produce more milk.
5. The child is upset. If the baby does not suck on time during the day and does not sleep on time, he will squirm at night. For a child to sleep well at night, he needs to be calm during the day. The fact that guests come to the house, that someone carries the baby instead of the mother, makes her uncomfortable. This has a negative effect on sleep.
6. There is an irritating factor in the body. When the baby is not sleeping, examine his body naked. He may have hair on his toe, an ant on his leg, or other similar factors.
How much sleep do newborns normally have?
You can sleep at least 35-40 minutes in one sleep, maximum 3-4 hours. They sleep an average of 14-17 hours a day.
Can night and day alternate in a baby?
Yes, it is possible. Therefore, when the baby sleeps during the day, the mother should also sleep. Otherwise, the child will not have the strength to pay attention at night. The child of a tired mother becomes capricious.
Isn’t it harmful for a baby to sleep too much?
-
If the child is developing well physically and mentally,
-
If it does not show any abnormalities,
-
If the baby is not breastfeeding on time and as needed,
-
If its soles are regularly wet and the inside is regular,
his long sleep is not a problem.
If a one-month-old baby sleeps for more than 4-5 hours, it is necessary to wake him up and breastfeed.
An ambulance should be called immediately in the following cases:
-
As the child sleeps through the day, his breathing slows;
-
The baby's color is starting to turn white, blue;
-
The skin of the baby’s ribs sticks to the ribs during respiration;
-
The baby's body temperature is rising;
-
It seems to you that the baby has swallowed something.
