Hydrocephalus is an enlargement of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) caused by an imbalance between the production and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid. This leads to a decrease in the volume of brain tissue and an increase in the circumference of the skull.
Causes of hydrocephalus: 1. Tumor. This impairs the permeability of the cerebrospinal fluid. 2. Hydrocephalus can occur as a result of exposure to risk factors during fetal development.
The main symptoms of hydrocephalus are:

1. Large accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain.
2. Rapid growth of ventriculomegaly.
3. Increased intracranial pressure.

Symptoms of hydrocephalus in infants include tightness and swelling of the larynx, rapid dizziness, and impaired eye movement.
Types of hydrocephalus:
- Congenital - occurs as a result of abnormalities in fetal development, injuries during childbirth, intraventricular hemorrhage, as a result of which the cerebrospinal fluid is blocked.
- Acquired - may be the result of a neuroinfection. As a result, the cerebrospinal fluid is blocked and the absorption of cerebrospinal fluid is impaired. Large volumes can cause mechanical obstruction of the cerebrospinal fluid pathways.
Hydrocephalus can be internal, external, open, closed, associated, occlusive, and areorbent. It is caused by impaired production or absorption of cerebrospinal fluid or atrophy of the brain.
During the compensatory phase of the process, monitoring of the dynamics is required. Surgery is required in the subcompensation and decompensation stages.
Depending on the type of hydrocephalus, it can be acute, subacute or chronic. Acute hydrocephalus requires urgent neurosurgery.
