The custom of waiting for the New Year is common to all nations. On New Year's Eve, Christmas trees are decorated. During the Christmas holidays, Santa Claus and Snow Maiden come to the children with gifts. In many nations, the custom of lighting Christmas trees on New Year's Eve has a long history. This custom originated in ancient times among the peoples living in England and Germany. In that distant past, people would gather around a evergreen spruce in the woods during the winter, lighting fires, singing, and having fun. 

The New Year does not start on January 1 in all nations. Some nations keep track of time according to the lunar-solar calendar, so the beginning of the year falls in one place in the fall and winter in another. 

In Central Asia and the Middle East, Navruz is an ancient, traditional New Year's holiday. 

In the ancient Romans, March was considered the first month of the year, as field work began at this time. The year consisted of 10 months, then the number of months increased by 2. 

In 46 BC, the Roman emperor Julius Caesar moved the beginning of the year to January 1st. The Julian calendar, named after him, spread throughout Europe. Thus, the New Year was a picture of waiting in the winter. 

According to the Hijri-Shamsi year, the new year is expected for the 21st time in most Eastern countries. According to the Islamic calendar, the new year is promoted 10-12 days a year, and the first day of the month of Muharram is the beginning of the year.
