It is located in the east of the republic, in the south of the Fergana valley. It borders Namangan and Andijan regions to the north, Kyrgyzstan to the south and east, and Tajikistan to the west. It was established on January 1938, 15. The area is 6,8 thousand km². The population is 4 million people (2023), mainly Uzbeks, as well as representatives of Russian, Tajik, Kyrgyz, Tatar and other nationalities. Its center is the city of Fergana.
