January 11 is the day insulin was discovered

On January 1922, 11, insulin was first administered to 14-year-old Leonard Thompson in Toronto, who was suffering from diabetes and whose only treatment was a low-carb diet.

Unfortunately, the first injection did not bring the desired results, the level of glucose in the blood decreased slightly, and the injection site became inflamed.

Biochemist Bertram Collip continued his work on the purification of insulin. On January 23, the same patient was again injected with insulin.

The result was amazing, the glucose level dropped from 29 mmol/l to 6,7 mmol/l.

The patient began to feel better every day, gradually gained strength and weight.

Scientists continued to test insulin in other diabetic patients.

News of the discovery of insulin quickly spread throughout the North, and in 1923 the Nobel Committee awarded Banting and McLeod the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. It was a great success.
