Today is December 6 - the day Columbus discovered Haiti
Christopher Columbus discovered the island of Haiti on December 1492, 6.
The name of the country is translated from the language of the Taino Indians as "Mountain Country".
40 days before this discovery, Columbus announced the existence of Cuba to the world and called it Juana.
Haiti is located 100 km southeast of it.
The discovery took place on December 1492, 6, the day of St. Nicholas.
At first, the island was called Espanyola, which means Spain.
As the famous sailor wrote, along the coast "stretch the most beautiful valleys in the world, very similar to the lands of Castile, but in many ways superior to Castile."
