A person who has lost the ability to sleep

Paul Kern was a member of the Hungarian Army during WW1. In 1915, while Kern and his troops were fighting the Russians, one of the enemy bullets hit him in the head. Kern is taken to the hospital, and after an examination, it is determined that the bullet has damaged the front part of his brain. Waking up in the hospital, Kern did not realize that this sleep would be his last.

In a condition that has puzzled doctors for years, this accident leaves Kern with the ability, or curse, to be unable to sleep. However, despite the lack of sleep, Kern showed no signs of physical or mental impairment.

Kern's condition baffles experts, and it becomes the subject of extensive research. Doctors try various treatments, including hypnosis and sedatives, but nothing induces sleep. For the next 40 years, Kern lived a normal life and died at the age of 55.
